WHAT WE DO

TSEF is actively engaged in providing materials and managing active learning spaces for children to conduct hands-on learning experiments and realize the excitement of discovery in the sciences as well as the arts. In the early stages of the program we are working in partnership with different organizations and volunteers to support after school programs and field trip experiences and demonstrations that give elementary and middle school children the chance to develop a perspective in technology.

Our volunteer mentoring programs work with students, parents and retired scientists to guide the experiments and challenges for students. Our early program this fall focused on building robots and programing them with math programs to engage, compete and communicate through light, sound and music.

In the program, students will be building and programming soft robots to hold objects. In additional build and program experiments we will build, test and refine race cars and FM frequency and short wave radios to track airplanes and connect to satellites. Our field trip programs will take us from museums to nature preserves to collect specimens for analysis in our Children's discovery laboratories.

Come be part of the exciting journey of discovery!

Partnerships & Community Connection

  • Student visits to bio labs and high tech manufacturing
  • Manufacturing Day
  • GISD Science teacher updates on careers
  • Teacher externships – teachers working in bio labs in the summers
  • Science Career Lectures at GISD
  • Research on endangered species with the University
  • Summer research experiences and Field Trips
  •   GISD career explore day to introduce middle school students and parents to careers in high tech

BUILDING A SOFT ROBOT

Check out this great video. We used plastic materials to build a"soft" robot grabber and programmed a servo device to control it   In our after-school program with STEM scouts, we spent several weeks designing and creating a soft robot grabber.   We programmed the servos to control the arms.
